Holy Spirit: Makes us New

7/5/2015

Teacher: Rusty Kennedy
Series: Roles of the Holy Spirit

Rusty's Notes

Inside Out
“Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head?”
   -     Core memories - super important time in their life
   -     Islands of personality make up Riley
   -     Sadness - dad left us... Emotions don't always tell the truth
   -     Joy tries to control & limit emotions
   -     Confusion between joy & happiness
   -     Joy "I just wanted Riley to be happy"
   -     Facts & opinions puzzle pieces get mixed up all the time
   -     Subconscious is where they take all the troublemakers
   -     Expanded console... Puberty

James 1:12-18 - 12 A man who endures trials is blessed, because when he passes the test he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.
13 No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God.” For God is not tempted by evil, and He Himself doesn’t tempt anyone. 14 But each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desires. 15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it gives birth to death.
16 Don’t be deceived, my dearly loved brothers. 17 Every generous act and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights; with Him there is no variation or shadow cast by turning. 18 By His own choice, He gave us a new birth by the message of truth so that we would be the firstfruits of His creatures.[1]

I John 2:7-11 - 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old command that you have had from the beginning. The old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
9 The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother is in the darkness until now. 10 The one who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness, walks in the darkness, and doesn’t know where he’s going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.[2]

The Spirit regenerates us (John 3:5-8; Titus 3:5)
Regeneration refers to the transformation of the corrupt human nature by the Holy Spirit.
   -     Regeneration is also known as “new birth” or “rebirth.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 - 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.[3]
   -     Jesus described salvation as regeneration (John 3:1–21), emphasizing that people must completely change their lifestyle to experience life under God’s reign (John 3:3, 5).

John 3:5-8 - 5 Jesus answered, “I assure you: Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born again. 8 The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[4]
   -     Jesus also emphasized the Holy Spirit’s role in regeneration (John 3:8).
   -     Through the work of the Holy Spirit, a person’s mindset and character is transformed from godlessness to godliness (Rom 8:6–8).

Romans 5:6-8 - 6 For the mind-set of the flesh is death, but the mind-set of the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind-set of the flesh is hostile to God because it does not submit itself to God’s law, for it is unable to do so. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.[5]

The Spirit washes and renews us
Titus 3:1-11 - 1 Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, 2 to slander no one, to avoid fighting, and to be kind, always showing gentleness to all people. 3 For we too were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved by various passions and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, detesting one another.
4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared,
5 He saved us — not by works of righteousness
that we had done, but according to His mercy,
through the washing of regeneration and renewal
by the Holy Spirit.
6 He poured out this Spirit on us abundantly
through Jesus Christ our Savior,
7 so that having been justified by His grace, we
may become heirs with the hope of eternal life.
8 This saying is trustworthy. I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed God might be careful to devote themselves to good works. These are good and profitable for everyone. 9 But avoid foolish debates, genealogies, quarrels, and disputes about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10 Reject a divisive person after a first and second warning, 11 knowing that such a person is perverted and sins, being self-condemned. [6]
   -     Such transformations enable believers to do good works.
   -     The “washing” here is not a reference to water baptism.
   -     The washing is a supernatural act of the Holy Spirit (“washing of regeneration”).
   -     Justification is by grace, not any act or procedure we might perform (see v. 7).[7]

The Spirit sanctifies us
2 Thessalonians 2:13 - 13 But we must always thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth.[8]

1 Peter 1:2 - according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, uncorrupted, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.[9]

Romans 5:16 - 16 And the gift is not like the one man’s sin, because from one sin came the judgment, resulting in condemnation, but from many trespasses came the gift, resulting in justification.[10]

The Spirit supplies us with Christ
Philippians 1:19, KJV - 19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,[11]

The Spirit transforms us into the image of Christ
2 Cor. 3:17-18 - 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.[12]

Colossians 3:10 - You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator.[13]

The Spirit grants everlasting life
Galatians 6:8 - 8 because the one who sows to his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.[14]

The Holy Spirit’s role is to make us new from the “Inside Out”.
