Gospels (69) - John 17:1-17

8/26/2018

Teacher: Rusty Kennedy
Series: Gospels

Rusty's Notes

  • Jesus has done everything He could in teaching His disciples.
  • Now, all He can do is pray for them.

JESUS PRAYS FOR HIMSELF
John 17
1
Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you,
 - So Jesus could glorify the Father.
2 since you gave him authority over all flesh (people),
  • God gave Jesus the ability to do miracles and continually escape the Pharisees in order for people to see that He truly is the Messiah.
so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him.
  • Jesus gave us eternal life but it originated through the Father.
3 This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ.
  •  The essence of eternal life is the ability to know intimately the heart of God the Father and God the Son.
4 I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
  • He glorified the Father by allowing the Father to work through Him.
  • Every word that Jesus spoke was the Father’s word.
  • Jesus knows even the hours to come are going to happen that He refers to them in past tense.
  • The crucifixion, resurrection and ascension are included in these works.
5 Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with that glory I had with you before the world existed.
  • Colossians 1:15 - He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.[1]
  • Philippians 2:6-7 - who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited.
  • Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, [2]
  • Jesus Christ possessed the Glory of God from eternity past.
  • This Glory that Jesus has always had was witnessed at the Mount of Transfiguration and will be witnessed again at the resurrection.
  • Otherwise, the rest of Jesus’ earthly presence, the Glory that is His has been veiled.

JESUS PRAYS FOR HIS DISCIPLES
6 “I have revealed your name to the people you gave me from the world. They were yours, you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
  • Jesus has revealed Himself to the disciples.
  • Jesus defends the disciples even though the chapter before he tells them they are going to scatter when Jesus is arrested.
  • Jesus sees what they are going to do through the Spirit before it happens.
7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, 8 because I have given them the words you gave me. They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you. They have believed that you sent me.
  • It’s like when a pastor just preaches a message and then closes the message by repeating the message and pleading with the audience to do as he taught them.
  • Even though the disciples didn’t know (at that time), Jesus knew that they were going to know once the Spirit came.
  • So pray as if you know what is to come.
9 “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me, because they are yours.
  • This verse destroys any universalist theology.
  • When were they given to Jesus?
  • The moment they believed they became “in Christ”.
  • Once you are “in Christ” you are there from eternity past to eternity future.
10 Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine, and I am glorified in them.
  • Everything that belongs to the Father belong to the Son.
  • Psalm 24:1-2 - The earth and everything in it, the world and its inhabitants, belong to the Lord;
  • 2 for he laid its foundation on the seas and established it on the rivers.[3]
  • “Them” – the disciples
  • “glorified” – past tense… it already happened… even though they were going to scatter and didn’t understand what He was truly saying.
  • Jesus saw their future and spoke about them because of their future.
  • This totally opposite of our society, you make one mistake or even say the wrong word then you are cast aside.
11 I am no longer in the world (The crucifixion, resurrection & ascension is so for sure that Jesus speaks about it in past tense), but they are in the world (unredeemed world that is controlled by Satan), and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by your name that you have given me (they are equal in character – same name), so that they may be one as we are one.
  • How did Jesus keep the disciples in the Father’s name?
  • Because He taught them about the Father.
  • He didn’t give them 3 points and illustrations.
  • He didn’t give them “responsibility”
  • He didn’t give them Law.
  • He taught them about His Father.
  • If they know the Father’s Name… they would take on the Father’s character.
  • If they take on the Father’s character then they become united.
  • We try to create unity for the sake of unity rather than just knowing the Father.
  • My friend Dale from Camp Zion drove 8 hours to hang out with our group for 3 hours because he saw something different in our group of people.
12 While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled.
  • Jesus was not surprised by Judas leaving the 12.
  • He called it back in John 13
13 Now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in them.
  • Jesus taught them things they could not understand.
  • But He knew that one day it would be revealed to them.
  • This gives me, as a teacher, much hope.
14 I have given them your word. The world hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
  • If the Holy Spirit reveals these things to you, you will not respond as the world responds.
  • You will not set people aside.
  • You will be considered “weird”, “a harborer of sinners”, “a sloppy thinker”, “a teacher/follower of a twisted Gospel.” (irony in that).
15 I am not praying that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.
  • All these disciples were martyred.
  • He is asking that they never falter in what they believe or teach.
  • Suffering will occur… but keep them faithful.
16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
  • Separated from the world – sanctified – holy – set apart.
17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
  • Who sanctifies you? The Father.
  • What does the Father use to sanctify you? Truth
  • My person (soul/spirit) is sanctified.

Gospels (68) - John 16:12-33

Series: Gospels

Rusty's Notes

John 16
8 When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: 9 About sin, because they do not believe in me;
  • Every unredeemed person is being convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit.
10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me;
  • Who is the Spirit convicting of righteousness?
  • Those who have been made righteous.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 - He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. [1]
11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. [2]
  • 2 Corinthians 4:4 – Satan is the ruler of this world.
  • Satan has already been judged… and lost.
12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now.
  • How come they couldn’t understand?
  • They did not have the Spirit yet.
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
  • Would they know all truth?
  • No, the truth you need to know.
For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears.
  • John 14:24 - The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.[3]
He will also declare to you what is to come.
  • They will remember exactly what Jesus has said and tell the people about things to come.
14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
  • This is not done through intellect alone but through revelation.
15 Everything the Father has is mine. This is why I told you that he takes from what is mine and will declare it to you.
  • He takes what belongs to Jesus and reveals it to me.
  • Did you understand grace fully in the beginning?
  • Do you now?
  • What about forgiveness?
  • What about love?
  • What about discipline?
  • What about sanctification?

SORROW TURNED TO JOY
16 “A little while and you will no longer see me; again a little while and you will see me.”
  • From Gethsemane to Acts 2
17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this he’s telling us: ‘A little while and you will not see me; again a little while and you will see me’ and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 They said, “What is this he is saying, ‘A little while’? We don’t know what he’s talking about.”

19 Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, and so he said to them, “Are you asking one another about what I said, ‘A little while and you will not see me; again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice.
  • Talking about the crucifixion.
You will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to joy.
Proverbs 14:13 - Even in laughter a heart may be sad, and joy may end in grief.[4]
  • I hung out by my Mom’s death bed yesterday morning and said goodbye to her probably for the last time… face to face.
  • We both, with tears streaming down our faces, said this is not forever.
  • We know where we will spend eternity.
  • For the redeemed, our sorrow turns to joy.
  • For the unredeemed, their joy may end in grief.
21 When a woman is in labor, she has pain because her time has come. But when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a person has been born into the world.
  • It’s because good memories that have followed the suffering.
  • There will be good memories that occur that wipes out all grief and sorrow.
22 So you also have sorrow now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy from you.
  • Tell me the Lord’s timing, as we work through this Gospel series has not been evident.
  • I needed that verse this week.
  • I got into the car yesterday and just lost it emotionally.
  • One of my former interns who is pastoring on the south side now texted me at that moment: Romans 15:13 – Now, may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.[5]
  • I wiped my eyes, put the car in drive and drove home.
  • My Father understands grief and He promises me joy in the midst of that grief and on into eternity.
23 “In that day you will not ask me anything. Truly I tell you, anything you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
  • In Jesus’ name – Because you know Jesus so well.
24 Until now you have asked for nothing in my name.
  • They prayed all the time… but to the Father.
  • They were Jews and knew how to pray to the Father.
  • Now Jesus is asking them to do something different.
  • Jesus took care of all their needs for the last 3 years.
  • He is asking them to still be dependent upon Him even if goes away.
Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

JESUS THE VICTOR
25 “I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech.
  • Matthew 12 – Jesus was accused of blasphemy and Jewish leaders rejected his messiahship.
  • Then Jesus began teaching in parables.
  • The Pharisees couldn’t understand the parables but Jesus would take the disciples and explain the parables to them and they still had a hard time understanding.
A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.
  • Acts 2 – Once they have the Spirit.
  • Don’t tell me you can’t understand this stuff.
  • You may not understand it to the depth of others but I guarantee you God will reveal amazing things to you.
  • Things that He has not even revealed to me!
26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I am not telling you that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
  • I don’t have to force the Father to listen to you.
  • He already loves you.
  • I am an advocate for you but He already loves you.
27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
29 His disciples said, “Look, now you’re speaking plainly and not using any figurative language. 30 Now we know that you know everything and don’t need anyone to question you. By this we believe that you came from God.”
  • Did the disciples really understand what Jesus had just said to them?
  • They understood perfectly?
31 Jesus responded to them, “Do you now believe?
  • Jesus knew they had it intellectually… but not spiritually!
  • They really didn’t get this.
32 Indeed, an hour is coming, and has come, when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave me alone.
  • As soon as Judas kisses Jesus… they are out!
Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 33 I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.” [6]
  • What is coming is going to be really tough.
  • The road ahead has many bumps and chuck holes… and even some sink holes.
  • But know this… in the midst of it… I will be with you and I will provide you with My peace.
  • Once Acts 2 occurred and they spiritually understood… they gave their lives for the Gospel.
  • In the midst of them saying they understand and they were going to scatter (leave Him), Jesus still responded with encouragement.
  • If you find yourself alone… just know… Jesus is enough.

Gospels (67) - John 15:13 - 16:11

Rusty's Notes

John 15
13 No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.
  • Who were Jesus’ friends?
  • Not only the disciples (and us), but also the Father and the Spirit.
  • No greater love was ever displayed than what Jesus did for us at the cross.
  • Jesus died for the unbelievers as well. (John 3:16)
  • Jesus is a friend of everyone.
14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.
  • You are my friends if you love one another as I have loved you.
  • Impossible to do unless you live your life by another source.
  • Most Christians believe the greatest aspect of being a believer in Jesus is salvation.
  • Pretty hard to top salvation.
  • But what if you could walk on this earth in your own earth suit but your source of energy, ability, thinking, creativity, love, mercy and grace came from a totally different source than yourself?
  • It’s the only way to live out Jesus’ commands.
  • To me, this is the greatest aspect of living as a believer.
  • Being born is great… but living the adventure is even greater.
  • But the majority of the church is still stuck on the birthday!
15 I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master is doing.
  • Difference between a slave and bond-servant.
I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father.
  • This is the beauty of knowing your identity.
  • You can know exactly what the Father thinks about you.
16 You did not choose me, but I chose you.
  • The disciples did not choose Jesus.
  • Some people the unredeemed are incapable of choosing Jesus, therefore it has to be done in eternity past.
  • John 6:70-71 - 70 Jesus replied to them, “Didn’t I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.” 71 He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, one of the Twelve, because he was going to betray him.[1]
  • Jesus did not choose His disciples for salvation.
  • Mark 3:14-15 - 14 He appointed twelve, whom he also named apostles, to be with him, to send them out to preach, 15 and to have authority to drive out demons.[2]
  • The discipler doesn’t have to know the whole Bible.
  • The discipler just needs to be more mature than the disciple.
  • I had a friend here last week that just needed some encouragement.
  • We didn’t have a Bible Study.
  • We lived life together… we laughed, we cried, we ate, he watched me interact with my wife, my son, my friends our ministry.
  • If I could restructure seminary… it would look more like 12 disciples hanging out with Jesus for 3-4 years. Doing life together.
  • Just teach practicality.
  • Jesus chose the 12 “to be with Him”… not for salvation.
I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain,
  • Who is producing fruit?
  • The Father, through the Son, through the disciples.
  • What fruit remains?
  • Those things done in the Spirit.
so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
  • You know my name… If you know Jesus… you are going to know what to ask for.
17 “This is what I command you: Love one another.
  • Agape love – based upon a choice… not a feeling.
  • Love each other unconditionally.

PERSECUTIONS PREDICTED
18 “If the world hates you, understand that it hated me before it hated you.
 - My Savior sympathizes with us because He has already endured this fallen world.
 - Jesus wanted to remind the disciples that the world (and it’s system) is going to hate them.
19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you.
 -  You realize that the evil one will use believers in Jesus Christ to detour the truth of the Gospel?
 - It’s hard to disassociate yourself from the conglomerate definition of Christianity.
 - It’s hard to disassociate yourself from the systems that have been put into place by the majority of the churches.
 - It’s not hard to see that the evil one doesn’t want believers or the church to be successful in not only sharing the Good News, but living it out on a daily basis.
 - So mediocre Christianity and mediocre church is effective in causing the world to hate the ones who have been commanded and given the ability to love.
20 Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they don’t know the one who sent me.
  • It often sounds if I am bitter about the institutional church and the system that has been established by “Christians.”
  • I’m not because I understand spiritual warfare and what Jesus reminded His disciples about concerning being in the world.
  • So I (we), am constantly questioning what I do personally with my time and resources.
  • Am I doing things because it is what I know how to do or because this is what the Spirit is calling me to do.
  • How do we shed the “Sunday Morning” system of all its systems, monotony. apathy and misconstrued ideas of what Christ called us to?
  • I don’t want to play church but at the same time I am living in the world that has systems.
  • Do I avoid systems? Do I comply?
  • The struggle is real but so is the fact that no matter my choices, the world is still going to hate me.
  • Man… that is doom and gloom… ugh…
  • No… it is only the result of doing what Jesus gives the ability to do… love one another.
22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 The one who hates me also hates my Father. 24 If I had not done the works among them that no one else has done, they would not have sin. Now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
  • Jesus performed the 3 Messianic Miracles:
  • 1) Heal a Jewish Leper (Matthew 8)
  • 2) Heal a man born blind (John 9)
  • 3) Cast a demon out of a mute (Matthew 12)
  • Jesus shined a light a light on their blindness.
25 But this happened so that the statement written in their law might be fulfilled: They hated me for no reason. (Psalm 69:4)

THE COUNSELOR’S MINISTRY
26 “When the Counselor (helper) comes, the one I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father—he will testify about me. 27 You also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.[3]
  • The Father through the Son who sends the Holy Spirit.
  • Defined them as apostles.
  • Acts 1:21 - 21 “Therefore, from among the men who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us--22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day he was taken up from us[4]

John 16
1 “I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling. 2 They will ban you from the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 They will do these things because they haven’t known the Father or me. 4 But I have told you these things so that when their time comes you will remember I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
  • Jesus couldn’t have told them all these things in the beginning because they couldn’t have handled it.
5 But now I am going away to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you.
  • Acts 2
8 When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: 9 About sin, because they do not believe in me;
  • Who doesn’t believe in Jesus? Non-believers.
  • Every unredeemed person is being convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit.
  • There is a good reason why non-believers hate us.
10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me;
  • Who is the Spirit convicting of righteousness?
  • Those who have been made righteous.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 - He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. [5]
  • Once believers understand they are righteous…. They will quit trying to attain righteousness and then they can learn Sabbath rest.
11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. [6]
  • 2 Corinthians 4:4 – Satan is the ruler of this world.
  • Satan has already been judged… and lost.

Gospels (66) - John 15:7-14

Series: Gospels

Rusty's Notes

John 15
6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 - 12 If anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. 14 If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will experience loss, but he himself will be saved—but only as through fire.[1]
  • Judgment Seat of Christ – Is for believers and is a judgment of their works based upon done by self or “in Christ”.
It’s the fruit that burns… not the believer
  • Romans 14:23 - …everything that is not from faith is sin. [2]
  • Romans 8:1 - Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus,[3]
  • Will our selfish works even be in heaven because they are sin? Or will they be listed without any penalty?

7 If you remain (abide) in me and my words remain (abide) in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.
  • Abide – Live my life by another source.
  • It means to keep in fellowship with Christ so that His life can work in and through us to produce fruit.[4]
  • Describe what living by faith looks like for me.
  • This is what we hear… “This abiding relationship is natural to the branch and the vine, but it must be cultivated in the Christian life. It is not automatic. Abiding in Christ demands worship, meditation on God’s Word, prayer, sacrifice, and service—but what a joyful experience it is! Once you have begun to cultivate this deeper communion with Christ, you have no desire to return to the shallow life of the careless Christian.”[5]
  • This is not about memorizing the Word of God… This is about knowing your Father so well that you know what His will is for your life and it greatly impacts how you communicate with Him.
  • This is not a formula for getting what you want.
  • This is the result of knowing the Father.
  • 1 John 2:13-14 – 1) Children understand forgiveness, 2) young men understand how to overcome the evil one and 3) the fathers know the One who is from the beginning.
  • There is an intimacy with the Creator.
8 My Father is glorified by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be my disciples.
  • How is fruit born through our lives?
  • Father through the Son through our lives (while we rest).
  • Who produces the fruit? The gardener through the vine through the branch.
  • You can think you do a lot but hopefully it is the Father doing it through you.
  • Yield to His life and much fruit will be produced and God is glorified.
  • It is impossible in the flesh but only works in the Spirit.
  • Many of these things could be counterfeited by the flesh, but the deception would eventually be detected, for real spiritual fruit has in it the seeds for more fruit.
  • Man-made results are dead and cannot reproduce themselves, but Spirit-produced fruit will go on reproducing from one life to another.
  • There will be fruit—more fruit—much fruit.[6]

CHRISTLIKE LOVE
9 “As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love.
  • To the 11 disciples.
  • There is only 1 way to do this… yield their life to another.
  • Christ’s love becomes their love for each other.
  • Unity – You will never see unity in the Church (body of Christ) until they learn to live their life by another.
  • When we have been opposed, hated, belittled, even irritated by others… we are given a free pass.
  • This is our thinking in the flesh.
  • Christ says, love them as I have loved you.
  • I know you can’t do it… you’ve already proved that.
  • So yield your life to me and I will do it for you.
  • Remain (abide) in me and I will do it for you.
  • I got you!
10 If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
  • What are his commandments?
  • Love the Jesus and others – I John 3:23
  • Do you view this as a command (as you were probably taught… so as to control your behavior)?
  • Or do you see this the result of abiding in Christ?
  • Jesus perfected the Law…
  • Did he do this in His own strength to prove His obedience to the Father?
  • Or was Jesus obedient as a result of abiding with His Father’s love?
  • You always start with intimacy…
  • Out of intimacy comes obedience.
  • We are taught to start with obedience.
  • I’m convinced that I can have a lot of sad breakfast with men and women who have entered into difficult circumstances.
  • But my response to each person will always be the same.
  • Get to know the Father.
  • This is trusting that God’s Word will be true.
11 “I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.
12 “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.
  • What is a friend?
  • It is not accountability partner.
  • It is knowing the other person so well that you don’t have to ask them the personal questions.
  • Who were Jesus’ friends?
  • Not only the disciples (and us), but also the Father and the Spirit.
  • No greater love was ever displayed than what Jesus did for us at the cross.
14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. [7]
Believe in Jesus’s name and love others.
