Holy Spirit: Convict, Counsel & Remind

6/28/2015

Teacher: Rusty Kennedy
Series: Roles of the Holy Spirit

Rusty's Notes

Convict: ■ verb - Declare to be guilty of a criminal offence by the verdict of a jury or the decision of a judge in a court of law.[1]
Convict: The activity of a god or spirit in influencing or coming upon a person and so directing or strongly influencing their activities.
   -     Proof
   -     Reprove
   -     Expose; show fault
   -     Certainty; full assurance

Jude 14-15 - 14 And Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied about them:
Look! The Lord comes with thousands of His holy ones 15 to execute judgment on all and to convict them of all their ungodly acts that they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things ungodly sinners have said against Him. [2]

James 2:8-13 - 8 Indeed, if you keep the royal law prescribed in the Scripture, Love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well. 9 But if you show favoritism, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the entire law, yet fails in one point, is guilty of breaking it all. 11 For He who said, Do not commit adultery, also said, Do not murder. So if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you are a lawbreaker.
12 Speak and act as those who will be judged by the law of freedom. 13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who hasn’t shown mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. [3]

John 16:5-11 - 5 “But now I am going away to Him who sent Me, and not one of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 “Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you. 8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: 9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; 11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.” [4] (with His disciples right before the cross)
   -     The Holy Spirit takes up permanent residence in the hearts of believers
   -     Romans 8:9 - 9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God lives in you.[5]
   -     1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - 19 Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body. [6]
   -     Jesus gave the Spirit as a “compensation” for His absence, to perform the functions toward us which He would have done if He had remained personally with us.

1 Thessalonians 1:5 – 5 for our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction;[7]

1 Corinthians 14:24-26 – 24 But if all are prophesying and some unbeliever or uninformed person comes in, he is convicted by all and is judged by all. 25 The secrets of his heart will be revealed, and as a result he will fall facedown and worship God, proclaiming, “God is really among you.”
26 What then is the conclusion, brothers? Whenever you come together, each one has a psalm, a teaching, a revelation, another language, or an interpretation. All things must be done for edification. [8]

John 14:26 - 25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit —the Father will send Him in My name—will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.” [9] (Lord’s Supper)

-     Counsel
o   Constantly reminding you of who you are and whose you are.
     o   You are holy
     o   You are loved
o   You have all you need
o   What counsel from the Spirit did you receive this week?
o   You are a patient person because I give you patience
o   I will speak for you (just shut up or… be still)

-     Reminds (what Scripture comes to mind?)
     o   God loves you
     o   Forgive
o   Somebody throw out a word
o   There is a dude in here struggling w/ self worth
o   There is a murderer in here
o   There is a sinner in here

-     The Holy Spirit unites us to Jesus Christ and to His body.
-     The Spirit reveals Christ to us, gives us His life, and makes Christ alive in us.
-     The Spirit takes the experiences of Jesus . . . His incarnation, ministry, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension . . . and brings them into our own experience.
-     Because of the Holy Spirit, the history of Jesus Christ becomes our story and experience.

Can you be still enough this week to hear/listen for the Spirit’s counsel in your OWN life?
Can you slow down enough to remember that He wants to remind you about things above?
Can you be more than just about yourself this week?

John 16:12-15 - 12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything the Father has is Mine. This is why I told you that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you.” [10]

Trinity
- John 17:21-23 - 21 “I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
22 “I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.”[1]

The Untold Story of the New Testament Church – Frank Viola
“It is a time before time. Nothing exists except the Trinitarian Community: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is All.
Among the three Persons of the Godhead, there is unbroken fellowship between the Father and the Son by means of the Spirit. A council is held. God conceives a plan. He shrouds this plan in a mystery, and He hides it in the Son. The plan will be disclosed at an appointed time far into the future. Paul of Tarsus will later call this timeless plan “the purpose of the ages” and “the mystery.” What is this plan? It is this: In eternity past, the Godhead purposes to one day expand its fellowship to a people not yet created.
Put another way, God wills to produce a community on earth that will reflect the community that is found among the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. God, who sees the end from the beginning, takes the first step in carrying out this plan. Within the Eternal Son are hidden ones whom God has chosen to be part of His ordained community. The names of the hidden ones are written in an eternal volume called “the Book of Life.”
Within the Godhead there is a Lamb. This Lamb is God the Son. At a future date God will symbolize this Lamb by a created animal called by the same name. This Lamb exists now… in eternity past… and He is slain. God completes all things before He creates all things.
God’s “eternal purpose” provokes Him to create a universe and an earth. He weaves into His creation pictures and symbols of His Son and of this future community that will express His nature. God then chooses a people for Himself: The nation of Israel. Israel’s entire life and history prefigures the spiritual community that will one day display God’s eternal nature on the earth.”
