21 From then on Jesus began to point out to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.
- Jesus had to die in Jerusalem
- Where was the Passover lamb sacrificed?
22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, “Oh no, Lord! This will never happen to You!”
- Rebuked his Lord… way to go Peter!
23 But He turned and told Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns, but man’s.”
- Jesus was not calling Peter Satan.
- Peter was trying to take care of Jesus’ problem.
- Jesus implied that Peter was doing the work of Satan.
- Pretty interesting that Jesus had just given Peter the keys to the Church and now He is rebuking him.
- Why is He rebuking Peter? He knows that He must go through with the Father’s plan and it includes pain.
- Why do we always try to eliminate the pain?
- If we never go through the pain… we never learn and we just keep repeating the lesson.
- Pain and suffering is a teacher.
- Sometimes it is the avenue to get where we need to be.
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.
- Perspective: Christianity is really hard… lotta work…
- We begin working for God… then burnout…
- Hebrews 4:9 – There is a sabbath rest to come.
- Matthew 11:30 – “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
- You must give up everything you have?
- How do you reconcile?
- Wake up and appropriate “I am dead”.
- There was only one cross to take up.
- His cross became my cross.
- Galatians 2:20 - I was crucified with Christ.
- Romans 6:6 – For we know that our old self was crucified with Him[1]
- Romans 7:4 - Therefore, my brothers, you also were put to death in relation to the law through the crucified body of the Messiah, so that you may belong to another—to Him who was raised from the dead—that we may bear fruit for God.[2]
- Once you admit that you have died, you realize that you are still living.
- How am I still living? I was resurrected with Christ.
- It is no longer me living but Christ who lives in me.
- I am now living my life by another source.
- Now I am not doing things in my own strength.
- Phillipians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
- That doesn’t mean I can do all things… It means everything I do… I can do through Christ.
25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will find it.
- This is what I hear all the time…
- The 10 Commandments were never intended for us as Gentiles… It puts us under the Law.
- The 10 Commandments only cause us to sin more.
- Romans 5:20 - The law came along to multiply the trespass.[3]
- You have to learn to live your life by trusting and walking by the Spirit.
- Or…
- Jesus died one time for all sin (except unbelief)
- Past, present future…
- I am forgiven one time…
- You are teaching a license to sin… Therefore you can’t teach that.
- You must work on not sinning or else you have cheap grace.
- Now who is missing the Gospel?
- The person who is trusting themselves not to sin?
- Or the person who wakes up every morning realizing they have died and are now living their life through Christ and trusting Him to not let us sin?
- People who tell me I am teaching license have never connected the Truth that Jesus says… “Hey… let Me do this for you”…
- Then actually trust Him to do it in you.
- You want to hold onto your life… you will never walk victorious
- Romans 6:4-11 - 4 Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life. 5 For if we have been joined with Him in the likeness of His death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of His resurrection. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that sin’s dominion over the body may be abolished, so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, 7 since a person who has died is freed from sin’s claims. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him, 9 because we know that Christ, having been raised from the dead, will not die again. Death no longer rules over Him. 10 For in light of the fact that He died, He died to sin once for all; but in light of the fact that He lives, He lives to God. 11 So, you too consider yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus[4]
- You call it a license to sin… I call it trusting Christ in me.
Mark 8:31-37
31 Then He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. 32 He was openly talking about this. So Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him.
33 But turning around and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan, because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns, but man’s!”
34 Summoning the crowd along with His disciples, He said to them, “If anyone wants to be My follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me and the gospel will save it. 36 For what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his life? 37 What can a man give in exchange for his life?[6]
Luke 9:22-25
22 saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”
23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will save it. 25 What is a man benefited if he gains the whole world, yet loses or forfeits himself?[7]
Matthew 16:27-28
27 For the Son of Man is going to come with His angels in the glory of His Father, and then He will reward each according to what he has done. 28 I assure you: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”[8]
Mark 8:38 – 9:1
38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
- Second coming
9 Then He said to them, “I assure you: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”[9]
- The Glory He will possess at His return
- His Glory being veiled by His earthly body while He was here on earth.
Luke 9:26-27
26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and that of the Father and the holy angels. 27 I tell you the truth: There are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”[10]
Matthew 17:1-8
1 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2 He was transformed in front of them, and His face shone like the sun. Even His clothes became as white as the light. 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.
4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here! If You want, I will make three tabernacles here: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said:
This is My beloved Son.
I take delight in Him.
Listen to Him!
6 When the disciples heard it, they fell facedown and were terrified.
7 Then Jesus came up, touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up they saw no one except Him —Jesus alone.[11]
Mark 9:2-8
2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves to be alone. He was transformed in front of them, 3 and His clothes became dazzling—extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them. 4 Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.
5 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— 6 because he did not know what he should say, since they were terrified.
7 A cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud:
This is My beloved Son;
listen to Him!
8 Then suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus alone. [12]
Luke 9:28-36
28 About eight days after these words,
- Eight days included the days of Peter’s confession and the day of transfiguration. 6 days to climb.
- These 3 disciples got to see the Glory of the Lord.
- This is like a movie trailer. Just a taste of what is to come.
- Moses – Represented the Law
- Elijah – Represented the Prophets
32 Peter and those with him were in a deep sleep, and when they became fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who were standing with Him. 33 As the two men were departing from Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it’s good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.
- Feast of Tabernacles (Booths) represented the Messianic Kingdom
- Peter believed the Messianic Kingdom had arrived.
This is My Son, the Chosen One;
listen to Him!
36 After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was found.
- They had listened to Moses and Elijah as a part of Jewish history.
- No they are instructed to listen to Jesus who is alone.
