THE PROBLEM OF IMMATURITY
HEBREWS 5
11 We have a great deal to say about this, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand. 12 Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food. 13 Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature—for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.[1]

WARNING AGAINST FALLING AWAY
HEBREWS 6
1 Therefore, let us leave the elementary teaching about Christ and go on to maturity,
  • We are encouraged to grow spiritually
  • This confirms the author wrote this book to believers.
  1. not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works,
       - Romans 6:14 - For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under the law but under grace.[2]
- Temple sacrifices were under the Law.
- Temple sacrifices were their own dead works.
- We are saved by faith alone.
  1. faith in God,
  • Where does faith come from?
  • Romans 12:3 - 3 For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one.[3]
  • They wanted to walk away from their faith and come back to it later after the persecutions had ended.
  • You don’t have the ability to put faith on and off.
  1. 2 teaching about ritual washings,
  • 1 Peter 3:21 - 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you (not as the removal of dirt from the body, but the pledge of a good conscience toward God) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, [4]
  • This is about publicly severing the ties between Judaism and Christianity. It would become public.
  • It will free them up from guilt.
  1. laying on of hands,
  • Still practicing Law by deciding who was to be commissioned to do certain acts.
  • Move beyond this…
  1. the resurrection of the dead,
  • Sadducees did not believe in resurrections.
  • Obviously, Jesus had been resurrected.
  • Move on…
  1. and eternal judgment.
  • God will judge every person without Christ.
  • John 3:36 - The one who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the one who rejects the Son will not see life; instead, the wrath of God remains on him.[5]
  • The everyday question… “How can God let people go to hell?” – Free will because He allows us to love.
3 And we will do this if God permits.
  • Believers have a choice to continue in their daily ruts or move on.
  • It will be God who permits to do so through the grace he supplies.
  • I am a testament of that… and so are you…
  • Look back at the past… where you have come from.
  • Meat…
  • Eternal security… can you lose your salvation?
  • Keep in historical context.
  • It is obvious these next verses are to believers.
  • Why would they be receiving persecution if they were not true believers?
4 For it is impossible to renew to repentance those who were once enlightened (believers), who tasted
(consumed versus touching, smelling, seeing)
  • Hebrews 2:9 – Jesus tasted death.
the heavenly gift, who shared in the Holy Spirit, (only believers did this)5 who tasted God’s good word (rhema… not logos… it had been revealed to them) and the powers of the coming age (end times – Millennium, when believers reign with Christ), 6 and who have fallen away. This is because, to their own harm, they are recrucifying the Son of God and holding him up to contempt.
  • Can a believer walk away from their salvation/justification and come back to it later to be reattached?
  • Hebrews 10:10 - By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.[6]
  • Hypothetical
  • They had to choose to walk on in maturity or die physically.
  • Think for just a second…
  • How many sins must someone do to walk away from their salvation? One? 100?
  • How long after someone sins do they have to wait to be forgiven of that sin? 2-3 days? Until people quit thinking about it?
  • If you can never feel secure about your salvation, you will never experience peace in this journey.
  • Those who are not sure… have to work hard to “persevere”.
  • Those who are secure knows that “perseverance” is trusting the Father who is responsible for keeping us “saved”. It ain’t on me!

  1. John 1:12 - I am a child of God.
  2. John 15:15 - I am Christ's friend.
  3. Romans 5:1 - I have been justified (completely forgiven and made righteous) and am at peace with God.
  4. Romans 8:17 - I am an heir of God and fellow heir with Christ.
  5. 1 Corinthians 1:30 - I have been placed in Christ by God's doing; Christ is now my wisdom from God, my righteousness, my sanctification, and my redemption.
  6. 1 Corinthians 6:17 - I am joined to the Lord and am one spirit with Him.
  7. 1 Corinthians 12:27 - I am a member of Christ's body (Ephesians 5:30).
  8. Ephesians 1:4 - I was chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and without blame before Him.
  9. Philippians 3:20 - I am a citizen of heaven.
  10. Colossians 2:10 - I have been made complete in Christ.
7 For the ground that drinks the rain that often falls on it and that produces vegetation useful to those for whom it is cultivated receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is worthless and about to be cursed, and at the end will be burned.
  • This is about works… not salvation.
  • The subject matter is the ground and the vegetation/thistles are the byproduct.
  • What is burnt? The byproduct. The works. Not the ground. Not the believer.
  • Believers will be judged with fire at the Judgment Seat… but it will be their works that are burned.
  • 2 Corinthians 5:10 - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. [7]
  • 1 Corinthians 3:13 - each one’s work will become obvious. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work.[8]
  • If the Hebrew Christians walked on in maturity, they would receive rewards.
  • If the Hebrew Christians returned to Jerusalem to practice sacrifices they would be physically consumed by fire by Titus and the Romans... but still had their salvation intact.
9 Even though we are speaking this way, dearly loved friends, in your case we are confident of things that are better (confident they will produce good fruit) and that pertain to salvation. (confirms to believers)
  • He is confident they will walk in their identity if they choose to mature.
10 For God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you demonstrated for his name by serving the saints—and by continuing to serve them. 11 Now we desire each of you to demonstrate the same diligence for the full assurance of your hope until the end, 12 so that you won’t become lazy but will be imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and perseverance.
  • This is just total encouragement for them to walk on as they already have.
  • Look back at how you already persevered.

INHERITING THE PROMISE
13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater to swear by, he swore by himself: 14 I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply you. (Genesis 22:17)
  • Abraham lived a life of faith based upon the promises of a Messiah.
  • You live in that promise after the Messiah. Forgiven.
15 And so, after waiting patiently, Abraham obtained the promise.
  • This promise to Abraham was unconditional.
  • He would not nullify His promise.
  • Abraham waited 25 years for Isaac.
  • Abraham is the father of the Jewish Nation that has been multiplied over the years.
  • Jesus was born a Jew as promised.
  • All who believe in Jesus are grafted in (Rom 4:13)
16 For people swear by something greater than themselves, and for them a confirming oath ends every dispute.
  • God could swear by no one greater than Him.
17 Because God wanted to show his unchangeable purpose even more clearly to the heirs of the promise, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.
  • Jesus is our hope… our anchor.
19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain. 20 Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner, because he has become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.[9]
  • The Temple is no longer needed.
  • Jesus has walked behind the veil in heaven for us.
  • We are now that Temple.
  • Our high priest, resides inside of us.
  • We walk daily knowing Jesus is the forerunner.

CHRIST, A HIGH PRIEST
HEBREWS 5
1 For every high priest taken from among men is appointed in matters pertaining to God for the people, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
  • Every high priest was taken from among men and served men.
  • He served as a mediator between God and man.
  • He ministered to the people.
  • Exodus 28:1 – Priests were descendants of Aaron.
2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he is also clothed with weakness.
  • He is sympathetic and gentle to the people because he has experienced life as they have.
  • He knows he has the capability to make the same bad decisions.
  • Our flesh wants to bust the chops of those sinning.
  • Other people want me to control other people’s flesh.
  • I have to teach Truth and trust the Spirit in them.
3 Because of this, he must make an offering for his own sins as well as for the people.
  • The high priest made bad decisions as well as the people he was mediating for.
  • On the Day of Atonement, he would offer a sacrifice for himself and then for others.
4 No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was.
  • You can’t appoint yourself as priest.
  • God appointed each high priest.
  • Priests were always descendants of Aaron. (Exodus 28:1)
  • All priests were Levites.
  • Today, you can basically ordain yourself via the internet.
5 In the same way, Christ did not exalt himself to become a high priest, but God who said to him,
You are my Son;
today I have become your Father, (Psalm 2:7)
6 also says in another place,
You are a priest forever
according to the order of Melchizedek. (Psalm 110:4)
  • Christ was appointed by God as high priest.
  • Psalm 110:4 - The Lord has sworn an oath and will not take it back:
  • “You are a priest forever
  • according to the pattern of Melchizedek.”[1]
  • Melchizedek’s priesthood is eternal.
  • Aaronic priesthood was only temporary.
  • Melchizedek’s priesthood never lapsed because of death.
  • Jesus didn’t become priest until His sacrifice at the cross. He was a prophet… now a priest.
7 During his earthly life, he offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
  • Referring to Christ’s night in Gethsemane.
  • Jesus honored God for who He was.
  • The author is reminding the Hebrew Christians they need to do the same… in reverence.
  • Who is responsible for saving?
8 Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered.
  • This is the difference between walking by your flesh versus walking by your spirit.
  • We suffer not only from our decisions to walk in the flesh but by others in the fallen world who do the same.
  • A wise man will walk in obedience to the Spirit to avoid the pain & suffering of making bad decisions.
9 After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,
  • Perfected as the sacrifice on the cross.
  • All the sacrifices were to be spotless offerings.
  • “source” – originates from Jesus, author, causes it to happen, a never ending well.
  • “eternal” – Not temporary… can’t lose it.
  • “obey” here is not directive to earn salvation but a byproduct of those who believe.
  • If you have salvation in Christ, it would be natural for you to walk in obedience with the Spirit in you.
  • Obey = You listen & walk (do)
  • We are saved by faith… not works.
10 and he was declared by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
  • Melchizedek’s priesthood is greater than Aaron’s because it is eternal rather than temporary.
  • Don’t go back to Aaron’s priesthood ways in Leviticus or you will lose your life in 70 AD.

THE PROBLEM OF IMMATURITY
11 We have a great deal to say about this, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become too lazy to understand.
  • “this” or “him” – Melchizedek
  • It wasn’t a concern to them obviously because they just went back to their old ways.
  • It was easier for them… lazy.
  • Their laziness was leading them to suffering and pain and even death.
  • Don’t give up… keep processing.
  • Their choice to sin was leading them to not pursue God.
12 Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God’s revelation again. You need milk, not solid food.
  • We need to stay plugged in and motivated… focused.
  • When we stop applying what we know… Financial Peace, diets, to do lists, etc. we forget what we know.
13 Now everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced with the message about righteousness, because he is an infant.
  • So every week we have to come back here and teach identity.
  • What if you start teaching identity to those around you?
  • What if the Church actually believed they were already made righteous?
  • Ephesians 6:17 - and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God.[2]
  • ‎This sword is the offensive weapon God provides us. The sword is the Word of God.
  • The believer saturates his mind with the Truths of God's Word, the Spirit brings to remembrance the specific verses needed to counter each of the enemy's schemes.
14 But solid food is for the mature—for those whose senses have been trained to distinguish between good and evil.[3]
  • When we become spiritually mature we have the ability to choose right from wrong and excellent over good.
  • We can see things from God’s perspective.
  • Spiritual maturity allows us to overcome the evil one and his schemes.
  • You have to know that you are already righteous.
  • You have the ability to be victorious and not walk around defeated.
Dig deep into His Word.

  • Redemption Rest – Forgiveness - Redeemed
  • Canaan Rest – Overcome the evil one
  • Sabbath Rest -

Sabbath Rest – David lived in Sabbath Rest at a young age… “How can I miss?”
Saul never experienced Sabbath Rest… “How can I hit him”
  • The difference is David knew God’s heart.

Psalm 95
WORSHIP AND WARNING
1 Come, let’s shout joyfully to the Lord,
shout triumphantly to the rock of our salvation!
2 Let’s enter his presence with thanksgiving;
let’s shout triumphantly to him in song.
3 For the Lord is a great God,
a great King above all gods.
4 The depths of the earth are in his hand,
and the mountain peaks are his.
5 The sea is his; he made it.
His hands formed the dry land.
6 Come, let’s worship and bow down;
let’s kneel before the Lord our Maker.
7 For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
the sheep under his care.,
Today, if you hear his voice:
8 Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah,
as on that day at Massah in the wilderness
9 where your ancestors tested me;
they tried me, though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years I was disgusted with that generation;
I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray;
they do not know my ways.”
11 So I swore in my anger,
“They will not enter my rest.”[1]

THE PROMISED REST
HEBREWS 4
1 Therefore, since the promise to enter his rest remains, let us beware that none of you be found to have fallen short.
  • The promise has been there along according to Psalm 95.
  • “let us fear” – “to be fearfully anxious” - fear the wrath of God… not for our salvation but for our actual physical lives because 70 AD is coming.
2 For we also have received the good news just as they did. But the message they heard did not benefit them, since they were not united with those who heard it in faith.
  • I heard on K-Love... "Easter is such a special time to tell people about the Good News."
  • Every day is a great day to tell someone about the Good News.
3 For we who have believed enter the rest, in keeping with what he has said, So I swore in my anger, “They will not enter my rest,” even though his works have been finished since the foundation of the world.
  • Number 13:27-33 - They reported to Moses, “We went into the land where you sent us. Indeed it is flowing with milk and honey, and here is some of its fruit. (great news) 28 However, the people living in the land are strong, and the cities are large and fortified. We also saw the descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites are living in the land of the Negev; the Hethites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the Jordan.”
  • Then Caleb quieted the people in the presence of Moses and said, “Let’s go up now and take possession of the land because we can certainly conquer it!”
  • But the men who had gone up with him responded, “We can’t attack the people because they are stronger than we are!” 32 So they gave a negative report to the Israelites about the land they had scouted: “The land we passed through to explore is one that devours its inhabitants, and all the people we saw in it are men of great size. 33 We even saw the Nephilim there—the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim! To ourselves we seemed like grasshoppers, and we must have seemed the same to them.” [2]
  • They couldn’t enter Canaan rest because they wouldn’t even enter Canaan.
  • They couldn’t overcome the thoughts of their enemies even though God promised them.
  • Your thoughts about whatever is your enemy look like giants to you.
  • Who is responsible for overcoming the enemy?
  • Exodus 23:20-23 - “I am going to send an angel before you to protect you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Be attentive to him and listen to him. Do not defy him, because he will not forgive your acts of rebellion, for my name is in him. 22 But if you will carefully obey him and do everything I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes. 23 For my angel will go before you and bring you to the land of the Amorites, Hethites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites, and Jebusites, and I will wipe them out.[3]
  • Their only problem was unbelief.
  • I promise you that you can never enter Canaan rest without experiencing war.
  • There will be a battle.
4 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in this way: And on the seventh day God rested from all his works.
  • Genesis 2:2 - On the seventh day God had completed his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.[4]
  • The Rabbis taught that since no evening was associated with the seventh day of creation, unlike the other six days of the week, that God’s rest continues throughout eternity.
  • Whatever God did for the kingdom today occurred at the initiation and foundation of creation.
  • God is very much at work in the lives of His people, but it was prepared in the beginning.
  • What God does now is apparently done in a state of rest.
  • Add to what God has already done the free will of man and bad choices
and we have this perfect world that has fallen.
  • We need to enter that same rest of God and rest of Jesus when He said, “It is finished.”
5 Again, in that passage he says, They will never enter my rest.
  • Sabbath rest = repent of sin, accept the Messiah as Savior and go on to spiritual maturity.
6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news did not enter because of disobedience,
  • This was a leadership issue.
  • The leaders couldn’t enter Canaan rest so neither could the followers.
7 he again specifies a certain day--today (it has always been available). He specified this speaking through David after such a long time:
  • Confirmation that God’s Word is written by men but inspired by God.
Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.
  • If you are a saint… Good News… You do hear His voice!!!
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
  • Sabbath Rest has always been available. Even in the Old Covenant… because David rested in it.
  • David rested from his own works and trusted.
9 Therefore, a Sabbath rest remains for God’s people.
  • It’s not about a duty or responsibility… chill out… trust God… He will work through you… especially if you figure out the “Sabbath Rest”.
  • Know Him… know His heart.
  • What Christ did on the cross was complete.
  • We are capable of resting from our own works.
10 For the person who has entered his rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, then, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience.
  • Effort!! First… just stop doing things!!
  • Sit at His feet.
  • Know the heart of the Creator
12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
  • God’s Word is active and able to change how we view things.
  • God’s Word can reveal motives in an instant.
  • I’ve had so many people telling me about choices that I needed to make and what God actually intended… yet, they had pursued the heart of God.
  • You can actually tell the difference in men who are pursuing the establishing of God’s Church (considered a valid & noble calling) from those who are pursuing God’s heart.
13 No creature is hidden from him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account.
  • God knows their hearts… and our hearts.
He knows the things we do in our strength vs His strength.

OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession.
  • “Hold fast to the confession.” – is not about salvation… but the Good News they had originally come to know.
  • Keep confessing Christ!
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.
  • Jesus understood the battle with the enemy better than anyone.
  • Jesus understood living in a fallen world and dealing with pain and sorrow (lost his best friend).
16 Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.[5]
  • Grace = the desire and power to do God’s will.
  • Jesus is serving as our High Priest.
  • Only by grace could they walk in God’s strength and power… same for us.

Sabbath Rest –
  1. My shoes… Students understand Sabbath rest yet are in the dessert.
  2. I wanted to rewrite MercyMe songs… now we are family and going fly fishing this week.
  3. When we learn to have Sabbath Rest… He does amazing things.

OUR APOSTLE AND HIGH PRIEST
HEBREWS 3
1 Therefore, holy brothers and sisters,
  • You are holy.
  • You were a sinner saved by grace.
  • You received total forgiveness… not partial.
  • Now you are a saint.
who share in a heavenly calling,
  • Philippians 3 – Citizens of heaven
consider Jesus,
  • Pursue intimacy with Jesus.
the apostle (sent with w a message… the message of grace) and high priest of our confession.
  • There was a priestly order.
  • Priests approach God on the behalf of men.
  • Jesus died so He could approach God on our behalf.
2 He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was in all God’s household.
  • Appointed as a prophet… when He came to earth.
  • Currently serving as the High Priest for our sins.
  • Will return as king.
  • Moses was considered a faithful leader of the Jewish nation… but he was sinful.
  • Jesus is the faithful leader and without sin.
3 For Jesus is considered worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder has more honor than the house.
  • Hebrew 1:3 - The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word.[1]
  • John 1:14 - The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.[2]
  • Exodus 34 – Moses went to the top of Mt. Sinai.
  • When he came down, the Glory of God was shining on his face.
  • 2 Corinthians 3:7-11 - Now if the ministry that brought death, chiseled in letters on stones, came with glory, so that the Israelites were not able to gaze steadily at Moses’s face because of its glory, which was set aside, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? 9 For if the ministry that brought condemnation had glory, the ministry that brings righteousness overflows with even more glory. 10 In fact, what had been glorious is not glorious now by comparison because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 For if what was set aside was glorious, what endures will be even more glorious.[3]
  • Jesus created the nation of Israel. Because He is the Creator.
  • Is the Creator greater than the creation?
4 Now every house is built by someone, but the one who built everything is God.
  • Hebrews 1:2 - In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe, through him.[4]
  • Colossians 1:16 - For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through him and for him.[5]
  • Jesus is God, but at the same time His own individual.
5 Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s household, as a testimony to what would be said in the future.
  • Moses was the greatest Jew alive in his time.
  • Deuteronomy 18:18 - I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.[6]
  • Numbers 20:7-11 - The Lord spoke to Moses, 8 “Take the staff and assemble the community. You and your brother Aaron are to speak to the rock while they watch, and it will yield its water. You will bring out water for them from the rock and provide drink for the community and their livestock.”
  • So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence just as he had commanded him. 10 Moses and Aaron summoned the assembly in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock for you?” 11 Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff, so that abundant water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.[7]
  • When Moses struck the rock rather than speak to the rock, this was disobedience.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:3-4 - They all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ.[8]
6 But Christ was faithful as a Son over his household. And we are that household if we hold on to our confidence and the hope in which we boast.
  • Moses was a servant.
  • Jesus is the son.
  • Who is the greatest?
  • “And we are that household” – They needed the confidence of what they had already come to believe.
  • They were being pressured to change their mind about their faith.
  • They were being pressured to believe what they had already experienced and moved on from… continual sacrifices.
  • We are constantly challenged in our faith… in what we believe.
  • My Mom was always faithful to remind me about Jesus.
  • She also reminded me about my behavior.
  • But if I just focus on Jesus… He is going to take care of my behavior.

WARNING AGAINST UNBELIEF
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:
  • Scripture is inspired by God.
Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your ancestors tested me, tried me,
and saw my works 10 for forty years.
Therefore, I was provoked to anger with that generation and said, “They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known my ways.”
11 So I swore in my anger,
“They will not enter my rest.” (Psalm 95:7-11)
  • That generation died in the wilderness, except Joshua and Caleb.
  • In Numbers, they wanted to return to Egypt, but God never let them return, because He was responsible for saving them.
  • This is the “redemption rest” we talked about 2 weeks ago.
  • They were supposed to enter into “Canaan rest” – Overcoming the evil one.
  • Learning to fight spiritual battles with spiritual weapons.
12 Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won’t be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.
  • Lose salvation? NO!
  • Unbelieving hearts could not enter into the land of Canaan.
13 But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin’s deception.
  • Redemption rest, Canaan rest and Sabbath rest.
  • Salvation/forgiveness, overcoming the evil one, walking intimately with the Creator (rest from our own works)
14 For we have become participants in Christ if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start.
  • If we can live in Sabbath rest, the world will know Jesus and want the same.
15 As it is said:
Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.
  • 64-66 AD – before the destruction of the temple.
16 For who heard and rebelled? Wasn’t it all who came out of Egypt under Moses?
  • This is not about salvation… but about Canaan rest.
17 With whom was God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, if not to those who disobeyed? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.[9]
  • This is not about salvation.
  • This is about living an abundant life that was promised to us here on earth.
  • It is not about doing things in our own strength, such as obeying the Law.
  • It is about walking in the Spirit and allowing Him to work through us.
  • It is figuring out that we can live this life by allowing God to even breathe for us.
  • To live our lives by another source other than ourselves.

Hebrews - Rest

4/30/2023

Teacher: Rusty Kennedy
Series: Hebrews

Rusty's Notes

I John 2:12-13 - I am writing to you, little children, since your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. 13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you have come to know the one who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have conquered the evil one.[1]
Physical Rest – Redeemed of Israel
         1) First Generation (Those 20 years and older in Numbers 14:26-30)
         2) Second Generation (Those under 20 years of age)
  1. Redemption Rest – Rest from physical bondage in Egypt
     - The first and most basic of the three levels of rest.
             1) Entered – Exodus 6:6-8 - “Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you to the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.”[2]
             2) Entered – Exodus 6:6-8

  2. Canaan Rest – Rest that came with trusting God to overcome the enemy.
    - Not a rest that is achieved when they die and go to heaven.
             1) Failed to enter – Numbers 14:26-30 - Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How long must I endure this evil community that keeps complaining about me? I have heard the Israelites’ complaints that they make against me. 28 Tell them: As I live—this is the Lord’s declaration—I will do to you exactly as I heard you say. 29 Your corpses will fall in this wilderness—all of you who were registered in the census, the entire number of you twenty years old or more—because you have complained about me. 30 I swear that none of you will enter the land I promised to settle you in, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.[3]
         2) Entered – Joshua 21:43-45 - So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. 44 The Lord gave them rest on every side according to all he had sworn to their ancestors. None of their enemies were able to stand against them, for the Lord handed over all their enemies to them. 45 None of the good promises the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed. Everything was fulfilled.[4]
  1. Sabbath Rest – Comes with true spiritual maturity; the abundant life associated with knowing the Creator intimately.
             1) Failed to enter – Hebrews 3:16–19 - For who heard and rebelled? Wasn’t it all who came out of Egypt under Moses? 17 With whom was God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, if not to those who disobeyed? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. [5]
         2) Failed to enter – Hebrews 4:8 - For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.[6]
Spiritual Rest – Hebrew Christians & Redeemed of all time.
         1) Believers in Hebrews
         2) All believers of all time
  1.  Redemption Rest – Rest from spiritual bondage to sin
             1) Entered – Hebrews 3:1 - Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.[7]

  2. Canaan Rest – Rest that comes with trusting God to overcome the enemy.
             1) Had begun to enter but had failed to fully enter – Hebrews 10:32-35 - Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings. 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way. 34 For you sympathized with the prisoners and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, because you know that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession., 35 So don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.[8]

  3. Sabbath Rest – Comes with true spiritual maturity; the abundant life associated with knowing the Creator intimately.
             1) Encouraged to enter – Hebrews 4:9-11 - Therefore, a Sabbath rest remains for God’s people. 10 For the person who has entered his rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, then, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience.[9]
Spiritual Rest – Hebrew Christians & Redeemed of all time.
         1) Believers in Hebrews
         2) All believers of all time
  1.  Redemption Rest – Rest from spiritual bondage to sin
             2) Entered – Hebrews 11:6 - Now without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.[10]

  2. Canaan Rest – Rest that comes with trusting God to overcome the enemy.
             2) Encouraged to enter – 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 - For although we live in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh, 4 since the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments 5 and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.[11]

Sabbath Rest – Comes with true spiritual maturity; the abundant life associated with knowing the Creator intimately.
         2) – Encouraged to enter – Psalm 95:7-11 - For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the sheep under his care. Today, if you hear his voice: 8 Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the wilderness 9 where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did. 10 For forty years I was disgusted with that generation; I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray; they do not know my ways.” 11 So I swore in my anger, “They will not enter my rest.[12]

I John 2:12-13 - I am writing to you, little children,

Hebrews 1:5 - 2:14

4/23/2023

Teacher: Rusty Kennedy
Series: Hebrews

Rusty's Notes

The author spends almost 2 chapters trying to convince the Christian believers outside of Jerusalem that Jesus is better than the angels.
  • The author uses their shared common experience of the Old Testament to prove that Jesus is the one prophesied about.
  • He is reflecting back on what they bought into to prove his point about the New Covenant.

  • Who was the MVP?
  • Who did we beat?
  • What was the score?
  • Who were the 2 coaches?
  • Who scored first?
  • Where was it?
  • What was the weather?

  • The Jews believed that Moses received the Law through angels.
  • Some Jews carried it further and worshipped angels.
  • They thought angels completely controlled the universe.
  • The writer of Hebrews knows the readers of this letter need more proof than these first 4 verses so He finishes this chapter and into the next convincing them of Jesus’ superiority.

THE SON SUPERIOR TO ANGELS
HEBREWS 1
5 For to which of the angels did he ever say,
You are my Son;
today I have become your Father, (Psalm 2:7)
or again,
I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son? (2 Sam 7:14)
  • Scripture never refers to angels as God’s offspring, because God has never “begotten” and angel.
  • Angels are created beings.
  • Colossians 1:16 says Jesus created all things. So if he created the Angels He has to be greater than them.
6 Again, when he brings his firstborn into the world, he says,
And let all God’s angels worship him. (Psalm 97:7)
  • “again” has to refer to His second coming.
  • “firstborn” is not about time but position.
  • “world” refers to inhabited earth not universe.
  • Don’t the angels already worship Jesus?
  • Not according to Paul & Peter… they are learning about the finished work of Jesus by watching the Church… us.
7 And about the angels he says:
He makes his angels winds,
and his servants a fiery flame, (Psalm 104:4)
  • It is obvious the angels are under Jesus’ authority.
8 but to the Son:
Your throne, God,
is forever and ever,
and the scepter of your kingdom
is a scepter of justice. (Psalm 45:6-7)
  • The only place in Scripture where Jesus is referred to as God.
  • His throne is forever.
9 You have loved righteousness
and hated lawlessness;
this is why God, your God,
has anointed you
with the oil of joy
beyond your companions.
  • Angels were never anointed.
  • Lucifer was anointed in Ezekiel, but he was a cherub.
  • Angels were the lowest of three.
  • Cherubim, seraphim and angels are still created beings.
  • If we love righteousness and hate sin, the fruit of the Spirit will be manifested in our lives and the anointing on us will be clear to others.
10 And:
In the beginning, Lord,
you established the earth,
and the heavens are the works of your hands;
11 they will perish, but you remain.
They will all wear out like clothing; (Psalm 102:25-27)
12 you will roll them up like a cloak,
and they will be changed like clothing.
But you are the same,
and your years will never end.
  • Jesus never changes… even when things seem out of control.
13 Now to which of the angels has he ever said:
Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies your footstool? (Psalm 110:1)
14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve those who are going to inherit salvation?
  • Jesus is sitting down next to God and the angels are running about ministering to believers.
  • The writer is not demeaning angels or even their calling.
  • It is that Jesus is to be worshipped and not the angels.

WARNING AGAINST NEGLECT
HEBREWS 2
1 For this reason, we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away.
  • They have heard the New Covenant and encouraged not to go back to the Old Covenant.
  • This is not about them losing their salvation.
2 For if the message spoken through angels was legally binding and every transgression and disobedience received a just punishment, 3 how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?
  • The Law (Moses) is doing its thing. If it is ignored, judgment comes (natural consequences).
  • Romans 5:20 - The law came along to multiply the trespass.[1]
  • 70 AD was coming… salvation is their only choice.
  • Emperor worship was big under Nero
  • Gentiles grew in number
  • Nero burned Rome and blamed Christians.
  • Jews took control of Jerusalem. (64-6 AD)
  • “neglect” – set your gift on a shelf.
This salvation had its beginning when it was spoken of by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
  • Spoken by Jesus but heard through others confirms that author was not original 11 or Paul.
4 At the same time, God also testified by signs and wonders, various miracles, and distributions of gifts from the Holy Spirit according to his will.
  • This is the Church today.

JESUS AND HUMANITY
5 For he has not subjected to angels the world to come that we are talking about. 6 But someone somewhere has testified:
What is man that you remember him,
or the son of man that you care for him?
7 You made him lower than the angels
for a short time;
  • Angels can approach the throne of God where man cannot at this point.
you crowned him with glory and honor
8 and subjected everything under his feet.
For in subjecting everything to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. As it is, we do not yet see everything subjected to him.
  • God put Adam & Eve over everything, and they gave that up.
  • Some day we will be subject over all things again… including angels.
9 But we do see Jesus--made lower than the angels for a short time so that by God’s grace he might taste death for everyone--crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death.
  • Jesus became God man… and died for us… He experienced suffering to the greatest degree.
  • He didn’t put us through anything that He didn’t go through Himself.
10 For in bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was entirely appropriate that God—for whom and through whom all things exist—should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
  • The supreme sacrifice was appropriate.
  • Christ will present all things to the Father.
  • We have already been brought to glory through Jesus’ life.
  • Bob Warren – Glory Video
11 For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters,
  • We have been sanctified… past tense.
  • Our behavior is being sanctified.
12 saying:
I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters; (Psalm 22:22)
I will sing hymns to you in the congregation.,
13 Again, I will trust in him. And again, Here I am with the children God gave me. (Isaiah 8:17-18)
14 Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death—that is, the devil--15 and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death.
  • Satan uses the fear of death as a terrible weapon to gain control over the lives of people.[2]
  • Revelation 1:17-18 - When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid. I am the First and the Last, 18 and the Living One. I was dead, but look—I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and Hades.[3]
16 For it is clear that he does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham’s offspring.
  • Jesus did not die for angels.
  • Once angels fall, they cannot be redeemed.
  • Jesus came to redeem man. Jesus is greater than the redeemed.
  • Angels could not be redeemed. Jesus is greater than the angels.
  • Jesus had to be an offspring of Abraham. He came to redeem the Jews.
  • Leviticus 25:25 - If your brother becomes destitute and sells part of his property, his nearest relative may come and redeem what his brother has sold.[4]
  • Jesus is to be worshipped because of the New Covenant being great than the Old Covenant.
17 Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement, for the sins of the people.
  • Jesus had to become a male Jew – only male Jews could become priests.
  • Jesus wasn’t always a priest, he became a priest at the time of the cross.
  • “propitiation” – to appease, satisfy or to pardon.
  • Jesus’ blood & death paid the price for man’s redemption.
18 For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.[5]
  • Jesus was tempted as we are tempted.
  • Jesus had to deal with the whole thought issue as we do.
  • He knew what it was to be despised and rejected, to be lied about and falsely accused.[6]
My Savior, my God understands my suffering better than anyone.

Hebrews 1:1-4

4/16/2023

Teacher: Rusty Kennedy
Series: Hebrews

Rusty's Notes

Hebrews is a book about Jesus:
  • Who He is and what He has done, and is presently doing, for those who have accepted Him as Savior.
  • The book of Hebrews is about Jesus the Son who became our High Priest and then became king when he sat upon the throne of God in fulfillment of Ps 110:1, 4.[1]
  • Hebrews confirms the supremacy of Christ to all created things, be they angels, Moses or even the Levitical priesthood.
  • Hebrews will help explain the purpose of the Old Covenant sacrificial system, as well as the regulations associated with worship in both the tabernacle and the temple.
  • The word better is used thirteen times in this book as the writer shows the superiority of Jesus Christ and His salvation over the Hebrew system of religion.
  • Another word that is repeated in this book is perfect; in the original Greek it is used fourteen times.
  • It means a perfect standing before God.
  • This perfection could never be accomplished by the levitical priesthood (Heb. 7:11) or by the Law (Heb. 7:19), nor could the blood of animal sacrifices achieve it (Heb. 10:1).
  • Jesus Christ gave Himself as one offering for sin, and by this He has “perfected forever them that are sanctified” (Heb. 10:14).[2]

Who wrote Hebrews?
  • We do not know.
  • It is the only truly anonymous letter in the New Testament.[3]
  • We do know the author had a great knowledge of the Law and the Levitical priesthood that he was most likely of Jewish decent.
  • According to 2:3 - It was first spoken by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him. The author heard the Gospel from those who had walked with Christ.
  • Therefore he probably lived outside of Jerusalem since he himself did not hear this from Jesus.

Who was Hebrews written to?
  • Hebrew Christians of Judea living outside of Jerusalem
  • They were being persecuted by the non-Christian Jews (Hebrews 12:3-4 - For consider him who endured such hostility from sinners against himself, so that you won’t grow weary and give up. 4 In struggling against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.[4])
  • No one outside of Jerusalem had died yet because of their practices/beliefs. But Steven (62 AD) & James had already been killed in Jerusalem to persecution.
  • The author also says they helped the needy. The church in Jerusalem was too poor to help.

When was Hebrews written?
  • Hebrews 13:23 - Be aware that our brother Timothy has been released.[5]
  • Timothy became a believer around 50 AD.
  • Hebrews makes reference to the existing sacrificial system at the Temple which was destroyed in 70 AD.
  • Pompey, a Roman General, seized Jerusalem in 63 AD.
  • Revolt of the Jews began in 64 AD and full out war with the Romans developed in 66 AD.
  • The non-Christian Jews were successful in their initial revolts and regulated what took place in and around Jerusalem.
  • The Pharisees were insisting that Temple practices of sacrifices were to continue, and each was to live according to the Law.
  • If no one lost their life for the cause, then most likely they scattered between these two dates.
  • Hebrews 3 refers to the Jews’ 40 years in the wilderness and how this was very similar in time.
  • They are approaching 40 years after the church was established in Acts 2. (70 AD)
  • These Christian Jews were facing a dilemma of either disassociating themselves from temple sacrifices and accepting persecution from non-Christian Jews or…
  •  Place themselves under the sacrificial system in Jerusalem… Denounce Christ and then later reunite after the persecution ended.
  • This decision would ultimately mean a physical death.
  • NOTE: They couldn’t have lost their salvation, but they would be judged with the destruction.
  • Destruction came in 70 AD at the hands of Titus who picked up where his father, Vespasian, left off in 69 AD.
  • Historian Josephus records that 97,000 prisoners were taken during the war.
  • 1.1 million, mostly non-Christian Jews died.
  • Over 100,000 Christian Jews escaped beyond the Jordan River and remained there until after the war ceased.

  • Context, context, context.

THE NATURE OF THE SON
HEBREWS 1
1 Long ago God spoke to our ancestors by the prophets at different times and in different ways.
  • The audience believed that God was a speaking God.
  • Moses – Genesis – Deuteronomy
  • David – Psalms – testified of a Savior to come
  • Isaiah – Malachi
  • The author is confirming the OT is absolute truth and God’s Word.
  • New Covenant believers spend a lot of time doing that.
  • In the OT, God spoke through prophetic speech (Hos 12:10), visions (Gen 46:2; Deut 13:1; Ezek 1:1), human mediated speech (Exod 33:11; Num 7:89; 12:8; Deut 34:10), appearance of God experiences (Exod 19:17–25), and a still small voice (1 Kgs 19:11–12).

2 In these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son. God has appointed him heir of all things and made the universe through him.
  • That phrase ‘in these last days’ is shorthand for the whole era of grace in which we live, between the first and second comings.
  • Everything the Jews knew about God in the OT was now being changed through His Son.
  • Everything the prophets had foretold was now being made known through the life of Jesus.
  • God went from multiple messengers to one, His Son.
  • The Truth from Jesus was to prevail that of the OT prophets. He is superior to previous agents.
  • Therefore, the New Covenant, established by Jesus, supersedes the Old Covenant, established by Moses.
  • God is saying everything is Jesus’ and some day He will rule over all that He already owns.
  • John 12:31 - now the ruler of this world will be cast out (Satan)
  • “Made the universe through Him” – John 1:1 – Since Jesus is the Word of God and God spoke all things into existence, then Jesus created all things.

3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of his nature, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
  • Jesus is the exact representation of His Father’s nature.
  • John 14:9 – Phillip hung out with Jesus for 3 years and asked to see the Father.
  • Jesus’ reply was if you have seen me then you have seen the Father.
  • We don’t do anything apart.
  • We think alike.
  • He works through Me.
  • GLORY!!! The same Glory!!!!

  • Jesus sat down… Why shouldn’t He sit down if His sacrifice was made perfect… finished.
  • Romans 8:34 - Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is the one who died, but even more, has been raised; he also is at the right hand of God and intercedes for us.[6]
  • Jesus, who came to earth and suffered as a physical man, tempted as we are tempted, sits now at the right hand of God and intercedes for us.

4 So he became superior to the angels, just as the name he inherited is more excellent than theirs.[7]
  • The Jews believed that Moses received the Law through angels. (Acts 7)
  • Some Jews carried it further and worshipped angels.
  • They thought angels completely controlled the universe.
  • Our society has the concept of angels.
  • God established and ordained the Church to carry the Gospel to the world.
  • Many worship the Church instead of Christ who established the Church.
  • Some even worship the messenger of the Church more than they do Jesus.
  • Lord, let the name of Jesus be spoken more than the name of Rusty.
  • Jesus is ranked higher than angels.
  • Even the name of Jesus is more superior.
  • The writer of Hebrews knows the readers of this letter need more proof than these first 4 verses so He finishes this chapter and into the next convincing them of Jesus’ superiority.
  • I rest from trying to convince you… go read!!!

Matt's Notes

- John 14:6 Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Jesus is the Way
- 1 Corinthians 10:13 Jesus is the Truth
- John 17:17, John 1:1 Jesus is the Life
- Genesis 2:9 Born into this world we all create our own version of Good & Evil. Being born again, our thinking CAN be transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2).
- John 14:10 Jesus lived a life of dependence on the Spirit for the words and deeds. He demonstrated what our life could be this side of the cross.
- Hebrews 4:9-11 Sabbath rest is not about a day of the week. It’s about reliance on Him for direction, energy and words.
- 2 Corinthians 12:9 Tap into His strength through weakness.
- Romans 8:1 Don’t let condemnation hinder you. It is not from Him.
- Hebrews 4:15 Jesus can relate to our battles. His sweat became like drops of blood in Gethsemane.
- Hebrews 4:16 We can go to Him when we’re in need. That’s all the time because we always need Him.
- Luke 15:20 As the prodigal son returned, his father ran at him on the road and hugged him. That’s a wonderful picture of our Father.
